This is what judel/vrolijk says about the 42:
"Designing a new Dehler in the popular 40-foot class was a big challenge for us when we designed the 41. We had drawn several successful models for Dehler, but the task then was to improve on all aspects. That boat was a really good compromise between racing sailors' demands for performance and holiday sailors' demands for comfort. The new Dehler 42 follows the new design line and balances well both holiday comfort and fine performance. The new style of the windows makes the boat easy to recognize, but the great strength lies in its versatility. Being able to upgrade from an uncompromising cruiser to an outstanding racer, the Dehler 42 is a perfect platform for fast sailing with a decent rating.

The size and speed potential should give an advantage over direct competitors and to be able to sail in free wind on the first cruise.
Hull, rudder and keel are run in CFD (flow tests) and after comparisons between our VPP and ORCi VPP, as well as sail area, stability and hull shape, we decided on the final design.
The result is moderate width, flared hull sides and U-shaped sections.

The standard keel on the Dehler 42 is T-shaped, for very good cruising ability. For cruising we have designed a shallower L-keel and for racing a new deeper one with a shorter, narrower fin with heavier bulb and flat underside. It weighs less, but with the crew on the edge, the stability is as good as on the predecessor."
